There are so many arrangements, expenses and pressures that go hand in hand with preparing for a wedding day. If couples aren't careful they can get so involved with planning the wedding and trying to get all the details right that there is little time to enjoy the experience. When my niece was planning her wedding day she had three bridal showers to be at, reception plans to get in order and was endeavoring to find a venue for the rehearsal dinner. The third bridal shower was scheduled at my home. I'm her godmother so I had wanted to have it be really special for her. A few days before the bridal shower we talked on the telephone. She sounded very anxious. She and her fiance were also having difficulties deciding on the best wedding songs for the nuptials. I recommended that she get here the night before the wedding shower and stay all night and we would kick back and I would help her organize a list of what still had to be done prior to the wedding. She thought this sounded like a good plan.
I did the vast majority of the preparations for the bridal shower prior to my niece getting there so that we could give attention to her to do list. She shared that the rehearsal dinner was her main stress due to the fact that the location they had reserved had double booked, so they needed to locate a new location. We started off by working on finding the best wedding songs for the wedding day so we could get one need out of the way thereby giving a good feeling that the other would be dealt with as well. As I predicted finding the best wedding songs was just a matter of searching the net, listening to samples, placing some orders and that was that. Now to tackle the rehearsal dinner.
The rehearsal banquet is historically handled by the groom's family; the truth is a number of individuals refer to the occasion as the groom's supper. My niece's fiance is from a different state so his family is prepared to pay for the rehearsal dinner, but they're not able to take over making the plans. My niece had touched base with the restaurant where the wedding reception will be located, but the only space available was the section where the wedding reception would be happening. My niece explained that the plan was to decorate the reception area prior to going to the church for the rehearsal.
We called two local restaurants to see if they could host the rehearsal dinner. Both had other gatherings planned. Her fiance's mother and father are divorced, also both have married again. This meant that there were additional people to include in the rehearsal dinner. This was also adding to her anxiety because she was doing her best to suss out the etiquette for seating. She had the seating chart approved for the wedding day, but not knowing where the rehearsal dinner would be happening diminished her ability to arrange a chart.
I asked my niece if she had called the church to check if the fellowship area would be open. Everybody could just circulate and have a light catered meal. This would be much less formal and would be easy to plan. The fellowship area was open that evening. We called two delis and ordered catering. My niece called her fiance and told him the new plans for the rehearsal dinner. He thought this sounded wonderful. He would make preparations to have a buddy of his tend bar and would set up for the drinks.
The rehearsal dinner was a nice relaxed evening. The guests were able to mingle and socialize and the bride and groom did not feel pressured to sit in one spot while everybody ordered their food and had it served. With having a buffet line the atmosphere was very casual and the out of town guests didn't have to try to find another place in an area that they weren't familiar with.
